New Water Laser Vaporizes Decay
Latest dental laser offers painless treatment

There's a new dental 'drill' in town. But this isn't a drill. It's a laser.

Up until recently dental lasers were used primarily for whitening teeth or curing fillings. But now there's a new laser that can remove tooth decay without any shots or drills.

"The hydrokinetic, or 'water laser' actually focuses its energy on the water it sprays out instead of on the tooth," says dentist Dr. Michael Kaludy. "The laser beam never actually touches the tooth."

The laser activates microscopic droplets of water, and it's the water that instantly vaporizes the tooth decay. Dr. Kaludy says, "It's so painless that most of the time patients don't even require a shot."

Are there other benefits of using the Water laser? "There certainly are," says Dr. Kaludy. "This new laser sterilizes the tooth as it removes decay. Unlike dental drills, it does not create 'micro cracks' in teeth so the chances of ever having cracked teeth and decay under that new filling are much lower. This means much less chance of needing crowns or root canals."

And, according to Dr. Kaludy, who is the first dentist in Tallmadge to use the water laser, there is no high-pitched whine or vibration like with a drill. "All you hear is a soft popping sound. It sounds like someone is making popcorn." "This is especially great for children. It's exciting to know that we can now raise a whole new generation of kids who never grow up fearing the dentist."
